Replica Spin
Being there for the Opening of the Replica Museum was a privilege and a great thrill. Listening and hearing all the planning, coordination and hard work that went into the manufacture of the Replica Huts, was an enlightening experience. Being with the people with the vision and the responsibility of it, was nothing short of awesome.
The next day was my day to spin. The Manager at the Coles supermarket at Sandy Bay, where Marion was staying, immediately saw how she could help and be part of this great project, and supplied her with 7 boxes of crushed ice to put on the ground at the museum so that Marion could still SPIN ON ICE! Set up by 830am, she began to turn HUSKY fibre into HUSKY YARN.
The Hobart temperature this day (20C) made quite a contrast to the original spin at Cape Denison (0C). In true pioneer style, though, and still wearing the Blue Kuletuk, Marion spun till the crushed ice melted away…. and on into the afternoon – cheered on by Tradesmen, tourists and passers-by, who all marvelled at the product of her labours…..
NOTE: Next to Marion’s chair, the picture of the original spin is open for people to see and compare.
